Does the iPhone 17 Pro Max support eSIM?
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is what decides whether a travel eSIM installs, not the Apple name on the box. Storage, radio and market variant all change from one model to the next, so every figure below was checked on this model.

What the iPhone 17 Pro Max does with a travel eSIM
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a phone, so the travel profile is a data line and your existing line stays the voice line. Calls and texts to your usual number keep arriving while Orbislo carries the browsing.
Installing writes the profile. Nothing is spent until it attaches to a network at the destination, so an install three weeks early costs exactly the same as one at the gate. Do it at home, on wifi, while you still have a connection to fix anything.
Storage and active lines
The iPhone 17 Pro Max holds 8 profiles, which is enough that most people never reach the limit. It still fills up if a provider issues a fresh disposable eSIM for every trip.
Active is how many lines run at the same time, and on the iPhone 17 Pro Max that is 2. Storage is how many profiles sit on the device waiting, and that is the number that runs out without warning.
Each destination's line installs in one tap from the Orbislo app, and while it is valid every refill lands on that same line. Most of Europe runs on a single line, so a trip through several neighbouring countries takes one slot rather than one per country.
- Home line: calls and texts, so bank codes still arrive on your usual number.
- Orbislo line: mobile data, with roaming switched on.
- Automatic data switching: off, or the phone borrows the expensive line in a tunnel.
5G on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and where it will not appear
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 5G radio and the travel profile uses it. Where a partner network runs 5G, you get 5G, on the same profile and at no extra cost.
88 of our 197 destinations are 4G only on the networks we buy from. On those the icon reads LTE whatever the handset can do, and no setting changes it.
Speed belongs to the network rather than to the profile.
What goes wrong on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the fix
Data roaming has to be switched on for this line. Your profile is issued outside the country you are standing in, so the device treats every attachment as roaming. Leave it off and the iPhone 17 Pro Max finds a network and then refuses to use it.
If the profile will not download at all, the order refunds automatically inside 60 seconds, with no ticket. Install again from the same order, because the profile is reissued to your account rather than lost.
On this device the sequence is Settings, Cellular, tap the Orbislo line, turn on Data Roaming. Then Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data, choose Orbislo, and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching.
- No service on the Orbislo line: roaming is off on that line.
- Connected but nothing loads: mobile data still points at the home line.
- Works, then stops after an hour: automatic data switching moved you back.
- Still searching: airplane mode on for 20 seconds, off, then restart.
Your SIM tray, and tethering
Tethering is included on every Orbislo plan at no extra charge. The iPhone 17 Pro Max can share the travel data with a laptop, a tablet or a watch, and nothing behind the hotspot needs a profile of its own.
What an Orbislo plan does once it is installed
Data never expires. A gigabyte you do not use in Lisbon is still there in Bangkok next year, metered plans have no throttle, and every customer gets 100 MB of free rescue data once a month on the line in use when the balance runs out. Unlimited runs full speed to 2 GB a day and then 1 Mbps.
One balance pays in all 197 destinations, and most of Europe runs on a single line, so a rail trip through three neighbouring countries is one install and one balance rather than three of each. Refills arrive on the line you already have, with no new plan or expiry date. Where a destination has more than one partner network, the line can move between them without you touching a setting.
How to install a travel eSIM on the iPhone 17 Pro Max
- Open the Orbislo app and tap Install
- Confirm in the Add Cellular Plan sheet iOS shows you
- Leave the label as Orbislo
- Turn on Data Roaming for the Orbislo line
Data roaming sounds like it will cost you money. On the Orbislo line it cannot, because it is how that line reaches partner networks abroad and there is no charge beyond the data you already bought.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max by market
- United States and Puerto Rico (A3257): In the United States and Puerto Rico the iPhone 17 Pro Max is model A3257, and it has no SIM tray. Every line on it, including a data plan for a trip abroad, has to be added as an eSIM.
- Canada, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands (A3525): Model A3525 is the iPhone 17 Pro Max for Canada, Japan, Mexico, the Gulf states, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has no SIM tray, whereas the iPhone 16 Pro Max sold in those places still had one, so a local SIM card bought on arrival will not fit.
- Other countries and regions, including the United Kingdom and Europe (A3526): In the United Kingdom and most other countries, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is model A3526. It keeps one nano-SIM slot next to its eSIM and also supports Dual eSIM, so a home SIM card can stay in place while a travel eSIM carries the data.
- Hong Kong (A3526): The iPhone 17 Pro Max sold in Hong Kong is the same A3526 model, with one nano-SIM plus eSIM and support for Dual eSIM. A Hong Kong owner can therefore install a travel eSIM before a trip and keep the local SIM card in the tray.
- China mainland (A3527): The China mainland iPhone 17 Pro Max, model A3527, is built for two physical nano-SIM cards and has no eSIM. No travel eSIM can be installed on it, so an owner heading abroad needs a physical SIM card from a carrier at the destination.
Networks on the iPhone 17 Pro Max
- The United States iPhone 17 Pro Max, model A3257, supports mmWave 5G on bands n258, n260 and n261 on top of sub-6 GHz 5G. It also lists 5G bands n14, n29 and n71 and LTE bands 14, 29 and 71.
- The international iPhone 17 Pro Max, model A3526, runs on sub-6 GHz 5G with no mmWave. Its 5G bands include n1, n3, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n77 and n78, but not n14, n29 or n71.
- The Japanese iPhone 17 Pro Max, model A3525, adds LTE bands 11 and 21 to the common set and keeps 5G bands n14, n29 and n71. It has no mmWave 5G, and it takes no physical SIM card.
- The China mainland iPhone 17 Pro Max, model A3527, does not list 5G band n53 or LTE band 53. It connects over sub-6 GHz 5G only, and both of its SIM slots take physical cards.
- The eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro Max holds two active eSIMs at once and supports Voice over LTE and Wi-Fi calling. That means a home number can stay reachable for calls and texts while a travel eSIM on the second line handles mobile data.
- Emergency SOS via satellite on the iPhone 17 Pro Max works in 20 countries, among them Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Iceland, Andorra and much of Western Europe. Travellers visiting those places can use it too, unless their phone was bought in one of the countries Apple excludes.
- Messages via satellite on the iPhone 17 Pro Max lets you send iMessage and SMS texts with no mobile or Wi-Fi signal in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Japan. Photos, videos, audio messages and group chats cannot be sent this way.
- Apple offers no satellite features on iPhones bought in China mainland, so the A3527 model has none. An iPhone 17 Pro Max bought in Hong Kong or Macao does get them, because satellite service there starts with iPhone 16e and later.
Worth knowing about the iPhone 17 Pro Max
- A travel eSIM from another provider only works if the iPhone 17 Pro Max is not carrier locked. Under Settings, then General, then About, Carrier Lock should read No SIM Restrictions. Apple cannot lift the lock; only the carrier that sold the phone can.
- Apple notes that eSIM-only iPhone models can activate without a Wi-Fi network in some countries or regions. Elsewhere an iPhone 17 Pro Max must be on Wi-Fi or a hotspot to set up an eSIM, so a travel eSIM is best installed before leaving home.
- An unlocked eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro Max can be activated with carriers around the world, which helps anyone planning a long stay abroad. Apple advises checking that the local carrier supports eSIM on your plan and that the phone covers its cellular bands.
- With iOS 26 or later, the iPhone 17 Pro Max can take a phone number straight from an Android phone running Android 16 or later, where the carrier supports it, such as EE in the United Kingdom or Telekom in Germany. Both phones need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- An eSIM from a China mainland carrier cannot be used on an iPhone 17 Pro Max bought outside China mainland. For data while visiting China mainland, Apple points to prepaid data eSIMs from worldwide providers.
- The iPhone 17 Pro Max is on Apple's list of models that can run iOS 27, so it receives the current version of iOS and the eSIM and travel features that come with it.
