Worth knowing about Belize City
- Belize City's international airport is not in the city: it sits in Ladyville, roughly 10 miles from downtown.
- The airport's published operating hours are 06:00 to 18:00 daily, with service outside those hours only on request.
- The airport states in its own FAQ that it offers free wireless internet to passengers, and taxicabs wait outside the terminal only during normal operating hours.
- A second, domestic-only airport - Sir Barry Bowen Municipal (TZA) - sits about a mile from the city centre and handles the short hops to the cayes, so a domestic flight may leave from a different airport than the one you landed at.
- Belize City has no metro and no operating railway; proposed rail lines to Belmopan and Orange Walk Town are still only at feasibility-study stage.
- Airport taxis are run by the Ladyville Airport Taxi Association. Tickets are sold at the Airport Taxi Counter right at the exit of the international arrivals hall, and the association also drives to destinations across Belize.
- Licensed taxis in Belize carry green licence plates. Tour guides and tour operators must by law carry a valid licence and photo ID, and tourism police wear light blue shirts with navy trousers and a black hat.
- The San Pedro Belize Express water taxi runs a shared shuttle from the international airport to its downtown terminal on North Front Street, about 25 minutes by road.
- From Belize City the water taxi takes about 45 minutes to Caye Caulker and about 1 hour 30 minutes to San Pedro. The operator asks passengers to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
- No boat runs directly between Chetumal in Mexico and Belize City. Passengers from Chetumal clear immigration in San Pedro, stay overnight on San Pedro or Caye Caulker, and continue to the city the next morning.
- Cruise passengers reach Belize City by tender, about 15 minutes from ship to shore, landing at the Fort Street Tourism Village, where the Belize Tourism Board keeps an information desk.
- Check in is split between two terminals: Tropic Air, Maya Island Air, Copa, TAG and Sun Country use Terminal 1, and the other US and Canadian airlines use Terminal 2. Passengers are asked to arrive three to four hours before departure.
- Roadwork and dredging are under way on the access road to the international airport, bringing slower traffic and uneven surfaces. The airport advises leaving extra time for the drive.
