Worth knowing about La Paz
- El Alto International Airport sits at 4,061 m (13,325 ft), the highest international airport in the world.
- The airport is not in La Paz itself but in the separate city of El Alto, about 13 km west and roughly 400 m higher than the La Paz city centre, which sits at around 3,600 m against El Alto's 4,000 m.
- La Paz has no metro or urban rail. The backbone of its public transport is Mi Teleferico, an aerial cable car network of 10 lines opened between 2014 and 2019, which runs above ground for its whole length.
- There is no cable car station at El Alto airport; the nearest Mi Teleferico stations are at La Ceja and on Avenida 6 de Marzo, so the last leg to the terminal needs a taxi or bus.
- Mi Teleferico runs 06:00-23:00 Monday to Saturday and 07:00-21:00 on Sundays and public holidays, with cabins leaving continuously rather than to a timetable.
- The city's free public Wi-Fi network is Chukuta Online. Browsing is capped at 30 minutes a day, although government education pages and online banking transactions are exempt from the limit.
- Chukuta Online hotspots include Plaza San Francisco, the La Paz bus terminal, Fuente El Prado and Plaza Tejada Sorzano in Miraflores, which is on 24 hours, as well as 24 municipal libraries and telecentres.
- Ride-hailing companies in Bolivia must register with the ATT, the national transport and telecom regulator, under Supreme Decree 5199; its online registration platform opened in November 2024. Fares are regulated by each municipality.
- Three Mi Teleférico lines, Red, Yellow and Purple, link La Paz with El Alto up the steep slope between them. Cabins seat 10 and leave every 12 seconds, and the trip is about three times faster than by bus or taxi.
- El Alto airport was officially inaugurated in 1965 as John F. Kennedy Airport, a name never used in practice. It has been El Alto International since 1999, and its boarding and baggage areas were modernised in 2008.
- Ferroviaria Andina's southern passenger train, the Expreso del Sur Ferrobús, starts in Oruro rather than La Paz and runs via Uyuni, Atocha and Tupiza to Villazón on the Argentine border.
- Closer to the city, Ferroviaria Andina runs a Buscarril, a 32 seat rail bus serving rural communities, from Viacha to Charaña on the Chilean border. It leaves Mondays and Thursdays at 08:30, arrives at 14:10 and returns on Tuesdays and Fridays.
