Worth knowing about Bandar Seri Begawan
- Brunei International is the only international airport in the country, so there is no alternative arrival airport to fall back on.
- The airport is run directly by Brunei's government Department of Civil Aviation rather than by a commercial airport operator.
- The airport is only about 8 km from the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan: roughly 15 minutes by taxi, or 30 minutes on the public bus that loops the capital.
- Brunei requires prepaid SIM cards to be registered under AITI rules that took effect on 4 September 2024. A visitor must present a valid original passport from their country of origin.
- AITI states that tourists wishing to buy starter packs must present their passport for verification of identity. Registration can be done in person at a mobile service provider or online through the provider's platform.
- Unified National Networks, wholly owned by the government of Brunei, took over all telecommunications network infrastructure on 1 September 2019 and runs it as the single wholesale network that the retail operators sell over.
- AITI says DST, Imagine and Progresif offer 5G plans in Brunei, and that no 5G roaming partners have been established yet.
- Brunei's country calling code is +673 and local numbers are seven digits. Area codes such as 02 for Bandar Seri Begawan were abolished on 22 March 2003.
- Kampong Ayer sits on the Brunei River beside the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan. The stilt settlement of walkways and pedestrian bridges had 10,250 residents in 2016 and is served by motorboat water taxis called perahu tambang.
- Brunei Tourism puts water taxi rides at BND 2 to BND 5, often negotiated, and the average public bus fare at BND 1. Buses run from 6am to 8pm.
- Brunei has no operating passenger railway. The country has 3,167 km of roads and about 290 km of navigable waterways, and water taxis serve interior settlements that roads do not reach.
- The Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge opened on 17 March 2020 and runs 30 km to Temburong District. It is the longest bridge in Southeast Asia and bypasses four Malaysian immigration checkpoints.
- Brunei International Airport is the hub of Royal Brunei Airlines and shares its site with a Royal Brunei Air Force base. Its international terminal is built for up to three million passengers a year.
- Uber and Grab are not available in Brunei. Brunei Tourism points visitors to Dart, a local ride-hailing app, which is often competitively priced against taxis.
- Metered taxis start at B$3.50 for the first minute or kilometre and add B$0.20 for every 250 m or 15 seconds after that. Airport trips carry a B$3 surcharge, and travel between districts adds B$8.
- Extra charges can apply with more than two pieces of luggage or more than four passengers. Taxis are easy to hail at the airport, hotels and the major shopping centres.
- From the airport there is also a published fixed fare list by destination. Most hotels in and around the capital are B$20 from 6am to 6pm and B$25 from 6pm to midnight, while Muara Jetty is B$40 by day.
