- Nicosia's own airport has been out of commercial use since the 1974 invasion - the last commercial flight left in 1977 and the site is now the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping force.
- Since Nicosia International closed, Larnaca (opened 1975) and Paphos (opened 1983) have handled all Republic of Cyprus traffic, so every arrival into Nicosia is a road transfer.
- Cyprus has had no passenger railway since the Cyprus Government Railway ran its last train on 31 December 1951, so buses, taxis and hire cars are the only ground transport on the island.
