Worth knowing about Nicosia
- Nicosia's own airport has been out of commercial use since the 1974 invasion - the last commercial flight left in 1977 and the site is now the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping force.
- Since Nicosia International closed, Larnaca (opened 1975) and Paphos (opened 1983) have handled all Republic of Cyprus traffic, so every arrival into Nicosia is a road transfer.
- Cyprus has had no passenger railway since the Cyprus Government Railway ran its last train on 31 December 1951, so buses, taxis and hire cars are the only ground transport on the island.
- Larnaca Airport publishes free Wi-Fi but explicitly flags it as a public network and advises against online banking or card purchases while connected.
- In the areas north of the Green Line that are not under government control, phones roam on other networks. Cypriot operator Epic bills use there outside normal bundles and tells customers to switch roaming off on return, so they do not stay attached to another network and run up charges.
- Kapnos shuttle tickets can be bought online until an hour before departure, or with cash or card from staff at the Nicosia Shuttle Station and at Larnaca and Paphos airports.
- Kapnos buses leave on schedule even when flights are late and cannot wait for individual passengers. If you miss your booked departure, the ticket stays valid for the next bus that day, if there is one.
- A standard Kapnos ticket includes one 20 kg suitcase and one carry-on of up to 8 kg, and extra luggage or sports equipment can be added when booking. Luggage cannot travel unaccompanied.
- Kapnos picks up right at the airport door and offers free parking at its Nicosia Shuttle Station, handy for residents leaving a car while they fly.
- Cyprus Public Transport, which runs Nicosia's buses, offers Wi-Fi on buses fitted with access points. The sign-in portal asks you to accept its terms, give anonymous details such as age and occupation, and answer a one-question survey each time.
- The Pame app from Cyprus Public Transport shows live bus positions, real-time arrivals, a journey planner and Motion card top-ups, and works in English, Greek, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
- Nicosia bus drivers issue only one-way, rural one-way and night tickets. Other tickets come from sales offices, and the 4-trip, 2-day and 3-day paper smart cards are also sold from vending machines.
- On a 4-trip paper smart card, once all four rides are used in a single service day, any further trips that day are free, so it behaves like a day pass.
- Tap a Motion card on the validator beside the driver as you board. A green light and a beep confirm it, while a red light and an error sound mean the tap failed.
