Worth knowing about Brno
- Brno's airport is only about 7.5 km from the city centre and a single bus, route E76, reaches the main railway station in 14-16 minutes.
- Brno has no metro; both airport bus routes simply run to the main railway station.
- Scheduled service is limited and largely low-cost or seasonal - Ryanair, Smartwings, Air Montenegro and charter operators - on an airport handling about 750,000 passengers a year.
- Brno's free public wifi is called BrnoPublicWiFI. You select the network and confirm the access terms. No registration, SMS code, e-mail or phone number is asked for, and use is capped at 200 MB per user per day.
- Free city wifi hotspots in central Brno cover namesti Svobody, Zelny trh, the rear of Jakubske namesti, the transport interchange on Nadrazni and the Ceska stop on Jostova, and are run by the city company Technicke site Brno.
- Tap a contactless bank card on the yellow validator when you board a Brno tram, trolleybus or bus and it issues an hour ticket. Tapping again as you get off converts it to a cheaper 15 minute ticket.
- Brno's tap and go scheme takes contactless Visa and Mastercard plus Apple Pay and Google Pay. The 15 minute ticket costs 20 CZK, the hour ticket 25 CZK, and a day of tapping is capped at 90 CZK.
- SMS tickets for Brno transport are useless to most visitors. DPMB states you must have a Czech SIM card and Premium SMS activated with your operator to buy them.
- Brno's tourist board puts it plainly. Buying a ticket by text message or mobile app needs a Czech phone number, but you can always pay contactless in the vehicle instead.
- The yellow ticket machines at Brno stops take coins, not banknotes and not cards. Card paying machines exist only at a short list of named locations, and are needed for the 5 day and 14 day passes.
- Travel inside Brno needs a ticket for zones 100 plus 101, priced at 20 CZK for 15 minutes or 25 CZK for 60 minutes.
- The official IDS JMK app is POSEIDON. It sells single, one day and multi day tickets and takes a bank card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or pre loaded credit, but not season passes.
- Brno has no metro but does have 12 tram lines over 70.4 km of standard gauge route. The horse tram opened on 17 August 1869 and electric operation began on 21 June 1900.
- The Czech Republic's longest tram tunnel is in Brno. The 912 metre extension to the Masaryk University campus in Bohunice includes a 602 metre tunnel and opened to passengers on 11 December 2022 on tram line 8.
- Ceske drahy runs 34 Brno to Prague services a day, hourly and up to three times an hour at peak, with a fastest time of 2 hours 37 minutes.
- Many Brno visitors arrive through Vienna. Vienna Airport lists RegioJet coaches from its bus station to Brno and Prague, alongside FlixBus services to other Czech cities.
