Worth knowing about Santorini
- Santorini's caldera is a water filled volcanic collapse whose inner cliffs drop more than 300 m at their highest.
- The Minoan eruption about 3,600 years ago threw an estimated 61 cubic kilometres of magma and rock into the atmosphere.
- In February 2025 an earthquake swarm of hundreds of tremors, the strongest magnitude 5.3, prompted about 6,000 people to leave by ferry and about 2,700 by air. The state of emergency was lifted on 3 March.
- The airport has one asphalt runway, 15/33, of 2,197 m, and an apron rebuilt in 2021 to hold up to nine airliners at once.
- The municipality of Santorini had 15,480 inhabitants at the 2021 census.
- Fira is the hub of the KTEL Santorini network. Buses run out from it to Oia, Kamari, Perissa, Akrotiri, Vlychada, Vourvoulos, Monolithos, Imerovigli and Firostefani, and the airport, so a trip between two villages usually means changing in Fira.
- KTEL gives the bus ride from Fira to the airport as 10 minutes. Its summer timetable runs the route roughly hourly from 06:00 into the late evening, with a return from the airport ten minutes after each departure.
- The Fira to Oia bus covers 11.8 km and runs about every half hour through the day in summer, with the last departures from Fira in the evening. Return buses leave Oia about twenty minutes after each Fira departure.
- KTEL Santorini charges a 25 percent night supplement on tickets for journeys between 00:30 and 05:00, and sells half price tickets as its reduced fare.
- The cable car linking the old port below Fira to the town was paid for by the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, founded in 1979. It now belongs to Santorini's 14 communities, and ticket income goes to local development work.
- The cable car climbs to Fira, 220 metres above the sea, in about three minutes and can move 1,200 people an hour. The mule drivers who work the same cliff path are paid a share of each ticket.
- From June to August the cable car runs every 20 minutes from 07:00 until 23:00, with the last car down from the top station at 22:40. From December to February it runs every 30 minutes only from 07:30 to 09:00 and from 15:00 to 16:00, with extra trips in between if maintenance allows.
- KTEL Santorini runs a fleet of 23 buses and links every village on the island by road each day.
- Kamari has the densest bus timetable on the island, with buses from Fira every 20 to 30 minutes between 10:00 and 22:00 and a last departure at 23:00. Perissa also keeps late buses, including express runs.
- Since 1 July 2025 cruise passengers going ashore on Santorini pay a per person fee under Law 5162/2024: 20 euros from June to September, 12 euros in April, May and October, and 4 euros from November to March.
