Worth knowing about Antigua
- Antigua Guatemala was the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala from 1543 until the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 destroyed much of the town and the capital moved away.
- UNESCO listed the town as a World Heritage Site in 1979 for its Spanish Baroque architecture, layout, churches and ruins.
- The town sits at 1,545 m above sea level and had 60,608 residents at the 2023 census.
- The nearest airport is La Aurora in Guatemala City, 25 km away, which is the fourth busiest airport in Central America by passengers.
- The municipality of Antigua Guatemala runs free wifi in four parks, and all of the networks start with the name MUNIANTIGUA.
