Worth knowing about Vik
- Vik has no airport and no railway. It is Iceland's southernmost village, sitting on Route 1, the ring road, about 180 km southeast of Reykjavik, so every arrival is by road.
- The village proper had 318 residents, yet it is the largest settlement for some 70 km around, which makes it the service stop between Skogar and Myrdalssandur.
- Vik is the wettest coastal town in Iceland, with about 2,250 mm of rain a year, roughly three times what Reykjavik gets, and it is also the country's warmest place by annual mean at 5.3 C.
- The Katla volcano lies directly under the Myrdalsjokull glacier above the village and has not erupted since 1918.
- Reynisfjara, the black basalt sand beach with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore, is at Vik.
