Worth knowing about Petra
- Petra has no airport and no railway: every visitor arrives by road at Wadi Musa, the town 3.5 km away that holds the Petra Visitors Center.
- Wadi Musa is about 250 km from Amman and about 100 km north of Aqaba, so either approach is a long road journey.
- Petra itself is an archaeological site in the Ma'an Governorate of southern Jordan; the accommodation, restaurants and visitor infrastructure are all in Wadi Musa rather than at the site.
- The Jordan Pass waives Jordan's tourist entry visa fee only if it is bought before arrival in Jordan and the holder stays a minimum of two consecutive nights, that is three days.
- The Jordan Pass is emailed as a PDF and as an image. Its official FAQ says to show it printed out, because the QR code might be unreadable through your cell phone, at the visa office and all sites.
- Petra and its Visitor Center open 06:00 to 18:00 in summer, from early March to the start of October, and 06:30 to 17:00 in winter. The Visitor Center sells tickets.
- Petra entry costs 50 JD for one day for a visitor accommodated in Jordan, but 90 JD for a one day visit by a visitor not accommodated in Jordan.
- Petra by Night runs Sunday to Thursday, starting at 20:30 and ending around 22:30, at 30 JD per person. Visitors must also hold a daytime Petra ticket or a Jordan Pass.
- The site authority states that the Jordan Pass does not include entry to the Petra by Night show and that a separate ticket is necessary.
- The Siq, the gorge leading to the Treasury, winds about 1.2 km, narrows to no more than 3 metres in places, and is enclosed by rock walls 91 to 182 metres high.
- Visit Petra advises using only licensed transportation options within Petra, which can be confirmed at the Visitor Center.
- The Petra Museum stands at the entrance of the Petra Archaeological Park, 1.6 km from the centre of Wadi Musa, opening 08:30 to 20:30 from April to October and 08:30 to 19:30 from November to March.
- The Jordan Tourism Board puts Queen Alia airport about 209 km from Petra, a 2.5 hour drive on the Desert Highway, and Aqaba's King Hussein airport about 128 km away, about two hours.
- From Amman, about 235 km away, the Desert Highway takes around 3 hours while the King's Highway through Madaba, Karak and Dana takes 4 to 4.5 hours.
- The Jordan Tourism Board lists one JETT coach a day to Petra, leaving Amman's Abdali station at 06:30 and the 7th Circle stop at 07:00, returning from Petra at 17:00. Schedules vary on holidays.
- Umniah states that a passport is enough to register and activate a Jordanian Visitor Line and that no Jordanian ID is required. Its visitor plans are sold exclusively online.
