Worth knowing about Maasai Mara
- The Mara's airstrips are unpaved: Keekorok has a 1,280 m gravel runway and Mara Serena a 1,050 m all-weather gravel strip, both taking light aircraft only.
- Flights into the Mara mostly leave from Nairobi's Wilson Airport, not from Jomo Kenyatta International, so an international arrival means crossing Nairobi first.
- The reserve's easternmost border is 224 km from Nairobi, and the airstrips sit around 225 km southwest of the capital.
- Mombasa Air Safari flies into both Keekorok and Mara Serena direct from the coast at Mombasa, bypassing Nairobi.
- The Mara Triangle takes no cash. Its own fees page asks visitors to pay park fees by M-Pesa or credit card, so a card that fails at the gate leaves no cash fallback.
- Mara Triangle tickets are bought from KAPS online with a Visa card, or on arrival from an authorised KAPS employee stationed at Purungat Bridge, Oloololo Gate or Serena Airstrip.
- The 12 hour park entry ticket applies from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you actually enter, and it does not carry over into the following morning.
- The Mara Triangle covers 510 square kilometres, about a third of the whole reserve, and has been run since 2000 by the Mara Conservancy, a not for profit management company.
