Worth knowing about Tripoli
- Mitiga, 8 km east of the city centre, has been Tripoli's only working international airport since 2018. It has not run continuously: airstrikes forced it to close in April 2019, and foreign carriers only came back in May 2021, when Tunisair was the first to resume flights.
- Tripoli International Airport at Qasr bin Ghashir, 24 km from the centre, has been shut to flights since 14 July 2014, when militias from Misrata fought for control of it and around 90 percent of the facilities and 20 aircraft were destroyed. Reconstruction has slipped repeatedly: Italian contractors stopped work in October 2024 over unpaid bills, the job passed to a Libyan contractor, and the first asphalt layer of the runway was reportedly laid in September 2025.
- A booking or a map that still routes you to Tripoli International (TIP) is describing an arrangement that ended in 2014. Scheduled traffic for Tripoli uses Mitiga (MJI).
- Mitiga was not built as a civil airport. It ran as the American Wheelus Air Base until 1970, then as Okba Ben Nafi air base, and was converted for civilian use under the name Mitiga in 1995.
