Worth knowing about Luxembourg City
- All public transport in Luxembourg bus, tram and train has been free of charge nationwide since 1 March 2020, including the tram in from the airport.
- The tram line to Findel airport was completed in March 2025, so older guidance describing bus as the only link is out of date.
- Findel is Luxembourg's sole international airport and the only one in the country with a paved runway, so there is no alternative arrival airfield.
- Free travel covers second class only. First class rail tickets and passes still have to be bought, priced from 3 euro for two hours up to 500 euro for a year.
- Free travel stops at the border, so a cross border ticket is needed beyond the Grand Duchy. Second class journeys to Athus in Belgium and Audun-le-Tiche and Volmerange-les-Mines in France are included.
- No ticket and no validation is needed for domestic second class travel, but passengers must be able to show a personal identity document if asked.
- The citywifi free network, run by HOTCITY S.A., covers municipalities including Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Strassen from more than a thousand antennas.
- Connecting to citywifi free is not anonymous. Creating the account on first connection requires a mobile phone number, because the validation code arrives by SMS.
- citywifi is designed for outdoor use only, so a signal indoors is not guaranteed. The free tier has no data volume limit; the Premium tier costs 4.90 euro a month.
- POST's separate POSTandHOTCITY network is not open to visitors. It requires a POST SCOUBIDO mobile plan, with the username and password sent by text on sign up.
- Tram Line 1 runs 16 km on 24 stations between Luxembourg Airport and the Cloche d'Or business district, and has been free of charge since public transport fares were abolished.
- A funicular railway opened with the tram's first phase on 10 December 2017, taking passengers down from the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge to Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station.
- Weekend night services run under the Night Bus and Night Rider names, so late arrivals are not left entirely without public transport.
- Findel handled 5,147,854 passengers in 2024 on a single 4,002 m runway, and ranks as the fifth busiest airport in Europe by cargo tonnage.
- The passenger terminals are two: Terminal A, inaugurated in May 2008, and the smaller Terminal B, which reopened in the summer of 2017.
