Worth knowing about Mamoudzou
- The airport is on a different island from the town. It sits at Pamandzi on Petite Terre, and reaching Mamoudzou means crossing the lagoon by barge to Grande Terre.
- Two shuttles run every half hour between Dzaoudzi and Mamoudzou: the barge, for foot passengers and light vehicles, and an amphidrome for heavy goods vehicles. At about 4.7 million passengers a year it is the busiest scheduled maritime route in France.
- The airport was officially renamed Aeroport de Mayotte Marcel Henry on 29 March 2022 by ministerial order. Anything still calling it Dzaoudzi Pamandzi is using the old name.
- Mayotte is the only French department with no public transport network beyond school services. Getting about relies on taxis and partly informal taxis brousse, and the roads around Mamoudzou jam daily.
- Mayotte has never had a railway, and the Longoni port at Koungou, not the airport, is the main entry point for goods.
- The single runway is 1,930 by 45 metres, too short for most wide bodies at full load, and coral reefs that have to be preserved make any extension difficult.
- Cyclone Chido severely damaged the airport in December 2024 and destroyed most homes, administrative buildings and part of the town hall in Mamoudzou.
