Underground and on the metro
Metro de Lima y Callao runs 2 lines. It opened in 2011. The operator does not publish whether the tunnels carry a mobile signal, so we do not claim either way.
Worth knowing about Lima
- No highway, metro or public bus route reaches Jorge Chávez airport; access is by the dedicated Airport Express bus or by taxi.
- A replacement terminal opened at Jorge Chávez on 1 June 2025, a roughly $1.2 billion project.
- Lima's Line 1 is a 34.6 km elevated viaduct, while Line 2, opened on 21 December 2023, is entirely underground.
- Line 4, which will finally connect the metro to the airport, only began construction in 2024.
- Peru's regulator OSIPTEL now requires foreigners to buy a mobile line in person at an authorised centre, with biometric identity checks against the Migraciones database, under Resolution 000116-2025-CD.
- Operators cannot sell to a foreigner without that biometric validation. OSIPTEL brought the rule in after finding lines sold on forged passports and photocopies with non existent data.
- Jorge Chavez publishes its free wifi network as FreeWifiJorgeChavez, and says you connect, accept the terms and conditions, and that is all.
- The Airport Express Lima counter is near Exits 2 and 3 on the first floor, and the run to Miraflores takes about 50 to 70 minutes depending on traffic.
- Airport Express buses carry free wifi and USB charging at every seat, which matters on a route with no metro and journey times that stretch past an hour.
- The bus has four Miraflores stops: Marriott and Larcomar on Malecon de la Reserva, the tourist information centre on Avenida Larco, Parque Kennedy, and Hotel Boulevard on Avenida Jose Pardo.
- Lima Airport Partners moved all operations to the new terminal on 1 June 2025 after a 12 hour pause, into a building three times larger and designed for 40 million passengers a year.
- The operator reports 25.5 million passengers handled in 2025 and says the new infrastructure gives two runways available for take off and landing.
- Line 2 is planned as 27 km and 27 stations, entirely underground, but only the five stations of stage 1A between Evitamiento and Mercado Santa Anita have run since 21 December 2023.
