Worth knowing about Algarve
- The Algarve is the southernmost NUTS II region of continental Portugal, not a city; Faro is its administrative centre and the airport is 4 km from downtown Faro.
- Faro Airport has no railway station of its own: the nearest is Faro station, 5.7 km away, and a 2018 study of an airport rail link has not produced one.
- The Linha do Algarve runs 139.5 km across the region from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António and is only partly electrified.
- Faro handled a record of more than 10 million passengers in 2025, with traffic concentrated in the summer.
- Near the Spanish border a phone can join a Spanish network without warning, either when the Portuguese signal drops or when a Spanish mast is stronger. ANACOM advises selecting the Portuguese network manually.
- That risk applies in the eastern Algarve, where the A22 motorway ends at the Guadiana International Bridge over the river border with Spain.
- Transporte Fluvial del Guadiana runs a passenger ferry every day of the year across the river between Vila Real de Santo António and Ayamonte in Spain.
- The Vamus Algarve tourist pass gives unlimited travel for three or seven days from first validation on all regular Vamus lines, including the Aerobus from Faro airport. It is sold in the app, online, at ticket offices and at 20 regional tourist offices.
- The Aerobus links Faro airport with Faro city centre and continues west to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos, so the western resorts can be reached without changing in Faro.
- Regional trains take about an hour and a half from Lagos to Faro and roughly an hour from Faro to Vila Real de Santo António.
- From Lisbon, the Alfa Pendular leaving Lisboa Oriente at 08:23 reaches Faro at 11:27. For Portimão or Lagos, change at Tunes onto the regional train.
- Faro charges a tourist tax of 2 euros per person per night from 1 March to 31 October and 1 euro from November to February, for guests aged 16 and over, capped at seven nights.
- Tolls on the A22 Via do Infante, the motorway along the length of the Algarve, were abolished from 1 January 2025 under Law 37/2024.
