Getting into Freetown
- Water taxi to Freetown, run by Sierra Leone Sea Coach Express Africa and SeaBird Water Taxi (FNA), about 40 minutes
- Government ferry, Lungi Tagrin to Kissy Town, about 60 minutes
- Highway around the estuary into Freetown (FNA), about 180 minutes
Worth knowing about Freetown
- The airport is on the far side of a wide estuary from the city. The two main water taxi operators, Sierra Leone Sea Coach Express Africa and SeaBird Water Taxi, are timed to specific flight arrivals and include a courtesy bus between the terminal and the Lungi landing point. The crossing takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on the boat.
- The cheaper government ferry between Lungi Tagrin and Kissy Town takes about an hour but only runs when there is enough demand, so it is not something to plan an arrival around.
- The road route around the estuary takes about three hours. There is no car hire at the airport, and British High Commission staff do not travel it after dark and rarely take it in daylight.
- During the rainy season from May to October rough seas delay or cancel water taxis, which leaves the three hour road route or a night in Lungi, where airport hotel rooms are very limited.
- The official name is now Freetown International Airport. Lungi International Airport is the former name and is still what most schedules, taxi drivers and signs use.
