Worth knowing about Galle
- Galle is 119 km south of Colombo; the Southern Expressway cut the drive to about one hour, against three hours on the old A2 Galle Road along the coast.
- Galle railway station is the junction of the west and south coast segments of the Coastal Line between Colombo and Matara, so it is a natural interchange point rather than a terminus.
- Dialog runs two airport stores right after the customs desk in the arrival lobby at Bandaranaike International Airport. You present your passport to a representative to activate a prepaid SIM. Tourist eSIM is also offered.
- SLT-Mobitel says a tourist needs only a foreign passport for its SIM, sold at SLT-Mobitel counters in the arrival lobby at Bandaranaike International Airport. An eSIM can be requested at the same arrival lobby counters.
- The Mobitel airport arrival counter is at H1, Arrival Public Concourse, Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, and is listed as open 24 hours every day of the week.
- Sri Lanka Railways online seat reservation opens 30 days before travel and closes 2 hours before departure. A NIC or passport number is required for each passenger. A 5 percent convenience fee applies.
- Sri Lanka Railways reservations accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club and Discover, or Scan and Pay using LANKAQR. The e-ticket is emailed and a confirmation SMS is sent to the number given.
- Pravesha is Sri Lanka Railways' e-ticket platform for second and third class commuter tickets, issued as a QR code. Pravesha commuter e-tickets are not valid on intercity trains.
- On the Sri Lanka Railways Coast Line station table Galle sits 113.88 km from Colombo Fort, between Richmond Hill and Katugoda. The line lists 67 stations and runs on to Matara at 156.813 km.
- Sri Lanka Tourism describes Galle Harbour as a natural harbour and the only Sri Lankan port that provides facilities for pleasure yachts.
- Expressway tolls take cash, LankaQR mobile apps, and cards, but the card option is stated as available to cardholders of Sri Lankan banks. Electronic Toll Collection covers only the E03 and the Kerawalapitiya interchange, not the road to Galle.
- The regulator states that approval must be obtained from TRCSL to import or bring in any mobile phone or device that connects to cellular networks with a SIM. Up to five units are allowed for personal use.
- An IMEI can be checked against the TRCSL records by sending an SMS to 1909 in the format IMEI, a space, then the 15 digit IMEI number.
