Worth knowing about Istaravshan
- Istaravshan was called Uroteppa until the Tajik government renamed it in 2000, and Ura Tyube in Russian before that. Older maps, timetables and bus boards still use those names.
- The town lies 78 km southwest of Khujand in the northern foothills of the Turkistan range, on the main road between Tajikistan's two largest cities, so long distance buses pass through rather than terminate here.
- That same M34 is the road from Dushanbe to Tashkent, running through Istaravshan and Gulistan, so traffic through the town is both domestic and international.
- Heading south from Istaravshan towards Dushanbe the road crosses the Anzob Tunnel, 5,040 metres at 2,720 metres altitude, which opened unfinished in 2006 and was not properly completed and reinaugurated until August 2017.
- Istaravshan municipality borders Uzbekistan to the north and west and Kyrgyzstan to the east, and about three quarters of its 273,500 people live outside the town itself.
