- Zanzibar is an archipelago, not a city: the main islands are Unguja and Pemba, and Zanzibar City on Unguja is the capital.
- Zanzibar is semi-autonomous within Tanzania, with its own Revolutionary Government, Revolutionary Council and House of Representatives, and its airport is owned by the Zanzibar government rather than the mainland authority.
- The airport is only about 5 km south of Zanzibar City, and international flights use the newer Terminal 3, opened in 2020, separately from Terminal 2's domestic and regional traffic.
