Underground and on the metro
Toshkent Metropoliteni (Tashkent Metro) runs 4 lines. It opened in 1977. The operator does not publish whether the tunnels carry a mobile signal, so we do not claim either way.
Worth knowing about Tashkent
- Photography in the Tashkent Metro was prohibited by law for decades because the stations were treated as military installations and nuclear shelters; the ban was lifted effective 1 June 2018, so phone photos on the platforms are now permitted.
- Tashkent airport's free Wi-Fi is the "#TASAirportUzcloud" network, covering the departure and arrival halls; the free option requires watching three short adverts first.
- Uzbekistan runs the UzIMEI handset registry: kun.uz reports that a phone whose IMEI is not registered within 30 days of first using a local SIM card is blocked from Uzbek mobile networks, with the connection restored once registration is completed.
- Wikivoyage's Tashkent guide warns that Yandex Go, the main ride-hailing app used from the airport and around the city, can freeze and fail to load if you are on a travel eSIM bought before arrival, and suggests a VPN as a workaround.
- Uzbekistan's airports changed ICAO prefix from UT to UZ effective 2 October 2025, so Tashkent is now UZTT rather than the older UTTT seen in many databases.
