What the Serbia numbers mean

Two numbers matter and only one of them is the one every seller quotes. The typical speed, 56 Mbps, tells you what a good moment looks like.

The tenth percentile, 14 Mbps, is the one that matters. It is the speed in the worst tenth of the day, when the cell above the station is full and everybody around you is on it too. A country with a high median and a low floor is a country that works beautifully right up until the moment you actually need it.

If the trip depends on video calls or tethering, plan around the busy figure rather than the typical one.

What happens in Serbia when the network is busy

Congestion is not a fault, it is a Tuesday evening. The question is what your eSIM can do about it, and for most travel eSIMs the answer is nothing: one wholesale agreement per country, one network, and no way out except buying a second eSIM from somebody else while standing in the street.

Mobile operators in Serbia

• Telekom Srbija: Telekom Srbija covered 97.85 percent of Serbia's population with 4G and 65.98 percent with 5G on 31 March 2026, according to coverage modelled by the regulator RATEL from the operators' active base stations.
• Yettel: Yettel covered 97.22 percent of Serbia's population with 4G and 83.24 percent with 5G on 31 March 2026, partly by sharing its 700 MHz spectrum dynamically between 4G and 5G, RATEL reports.
• A1 Srbija: A1 Srbija covered 96.44 percent of Serbia's population with 4G and 49.73 percent with 5G on 31 March 2026, and has switched its 3G network off entirely, according to RATEL.

Older networks in Serbia

• A1 Srbija has shut down 3G altogether to use its spectrum for newer technology, while Telekom Srbija and Yettel still run 3G, so a phone that relies on 3G only works on those two networks in Serbia.

5G in Serbia

• On 2 December 2025 RATEL granted Telekom Srbija, Yettel and A1 Srbija licences across the 700, 900, 1800, 2100, 2600 and 3400 to 3800 MHz bands, after they paid the first half of fees totalling 150,049,715 euros.
• 5G reached 47.93 percent of Serbia's territory on Yettel, 39.74 percent on Telekom Srbija and 8.80 percent on A1 Srbija in March 2026, so outside towns a visitor is still usually on 4G.

Network notes for Serbia

• Serbia had about 7.913 million active mobile users in the second quarter of 2026, who averaged about 7.4 minutes of calls and 1.3 text messages a day, according to RATEL's market review.
• The cable and broadband company SBB was merged into the mobile operator Yettel on 1 April 2026, RATEL notes in its review of the second quarter of 2026.
• 2G still covers more than 98 percent of Serbia's population on all three networks, while by territory 2G reaches between 86 and 93 percent of the country depending on the operator, RATEL's March 2026 figures show.
