| Carrier | Role | 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Viva | Primary, used by default | 4G only |
| Ucom | Failover, used when the primary degrades | 4G only |
You do not choose between them. If the network you are on gets congested we move you to the other one automatically, in the middle of your trip, and tell you afterwards.
About these figures
The speed figures on this page show the typical download speed and the speed when the network is busy, for the country as a whole and for its main cities.
What the Armenia numbers mean
Two numbers matter and only one of them is the one every seller quotes. The typical speed, 43 Mbps, tells you what a good moment looks like.
The tenth percentile, 10 Mbps, is the one that matters. It is the speed in the worst tenth of the day, when the cell above the station is full and everybody around you is on it too. A country with a high median and a low floor is a country that works beautifully right up until the moment you actually need it.
If the trip depends on video calls or tethering, plan around the busy figure rather than the typical one.
What happens in Armenia when the network is busy
Congestion is not a fault, it is a Tuesday evening. The question is what your eSIM can do about it, and for most travel eSIMs the answer is nothing: one wholesale agreement per country, one network, and no way out except buying a second eSIM from somebody else while standing in the street.
Here, Orbislo traffic runs over Viva and Ucom. When the network you are on degrades we move you to another one, mid trip, without you asking, and tell you afterwards rather than interrupting you at the time.
Mobile operators in Armenia
- Viva Armenia: Viva, the largest operator, ended 2024 with 2.34 million active subscribers and 1.897 million internet subscribers. It reports 2G and 3G coverage of 99.8 percent of populated areas and 4G coverage of 99.6 percent.
- Viva ownership: The regulator approved the sale of all shares in Viva-MTS by a Cyprus subsidiary of Russia's MTS group to Cyprus based Fedilco Group in November 2023. In January 2024 Fedilco announced it would give the Armenian government 20 percent of the company at no cost.
- Team Telecom Armenia: Team Telecom Armenia holds licence No. 60 first issued in 1995 and extended to 3 March 2028. It launched Armenia's first GSM network in 1996, its first 3G network in 2008 and 4G in 2016.
- Team coverage: Team had about 26 percent of mobile subscribers at the end of 2023 and 1.05 million active users by June 2024. In July 2024 its 2G reached 98.2 percent of the population, 3G 96.2 percent and 4G only 74.1 percent, on 1,036 base stations.
5G in Armenia
- Team won two 700 MHz permits in March 2023, covering 713 to 733 MHz paired with 768 to 788 MHz, valid until March 2033. It committed to launch 5G in Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor.
- In April 2025 the regulator gave Viva the 2300 to 2400 MHz band for ten years for 2.5 billion drams. Viva must cover 98 percent of highways with mobile internet, at least 10 percent with 5G, and reach 60 percent 5G coverage in every urban community by year seven.
- Ucom completed its nationwide 5G rollout in November 2025, a year after starting, reaching 48 cities, hundreds of rural communities, the Yerevan to Dilijan highway and the Bagratashen, Bavra and Agarak border crossings. Dastakert is the only city left without it for technical reasons.
- By 2024 partial 5G ran in 29 urban and 19 rural settlements, including Yerevan, Gyumri and Vanadzor. These networks are non standalone, sharing spectrum dynamically with 4G and using carrier aggregation.
- The 3600 to 3800 MHz range was freed for 5G on 6 August 2024 and handed to the regulator for tender. The planned conditions include 5G at Zvartnots, Gyumri and Kapan airports, at every border customs checkpoint and along 98 percent of interstate highways.
Network notes for Armenia
- 4G+ is available in all 1,002 settlements of Armenia. By 2024, 746 settlements had broadband from at least two operators and 516 from three or more.
- Regulator decisions No. 92 and No. 93 of 2024 oblige operators to publish detailed network access and geographic coverage data, including mobile broadband and 5G availability along interstate highways.
- SpaceX's Starlink was licensed to operate in Armenia in 2024 under regulator decision No. 384, which is expected to widen high speed internet access in remote and mountainous areas.
- Armenia's backbone reaches the global internet through four providers' fibre routes via Georgia, with a limited link through Iran mostly as backup. In January 2024 damage to incoming cables outside the country disrupted connections for two days.
