Worth knowing about Bermuda
- Telecommunications apparatus must be type approved before it is imported into Bermuda. Section 28B of the Telecommunications Act 1986 sets the accepted standards as an FCC grant, a Canadian Standards Association International certificate or an ETSI declaration of conformity, the Regulatory Authority does no testing of its own, and each application costs 200 dollars.
- From 14 February 2025 the Regulatory Authority granted type approval across the board to devices that transmit only on Bluetooth or Wi-Fi frequencies, so those no longer need an individual application.
- Mobile carriers must unlock an eligible handset free of charge within one business day of a request from a current or former customer. A phone bought from anywhere other than a Bermuda mobile carrier is not eligible for unlocking.
- Every provider has to maintain a list of emergency service numbers that all of its customers can call free of charge at any time, and the Regulatory Authority approves what goes on that list.
