Worth knowing about Road Town
- The airport is not on Tortola. It sits on Beef Island, joined to the main island by the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, so every arrival crosses a bridge before it reaches a road.
- Departure charges at Lettsome for IATA airlines come to US$50: a US$15 departure tax, a US$5 security fee and a US$30 Airport Development Fee. Neither the departure tax nor the security fee is charged at the territory's other two airports.
- Everyone arriving in the British Virgin Islands, by air or by sea, pays a US$10 Environmental and Tourism Levy on top of that.
- Lettsome takes short haul traffic only, on a 1,415 metre runway. Long distance arrivals usually land at Cyril E. King Airport in the US Virgin Islands and finish the journey by ferry.
- The Road Town ferry terminal is at the northwest end of the town. Ferries run through the day every day but rarely at night, so a late arrival can leave you stuck on the wrong island.
- Buses on Tortola are full size passenger vans or open sided pick up trucks with bench seating and a canvas top, known locally as safaris, and they are often the cheap way from the airport into Road Town.
