Worth knowing about Banff
- Banff has no airport of its own. Calgary International (YYC) is the arrival airport, with the town 128 kilometres (80 miles) west of Calgary and the highway drive taking about 1.5 hours.
- The car-free route in is a scheduled shuttle: the Town of Banff lists seven operators (Banff Airporter, Brewster Express, FlixBus, Discover Banff Tours, Vivo Green, The Fairy Bus, AbestX) at $15 to $80 per trip depending on season and booking.
- Banff Airporter asks passengers to allow 45 minutes to collect bags and reach its desk after a domestic arrival, and 60 minutes after an international arrival, before their booked departure.
- Banff sits inside Banff National Park, so a Parks Canada entry pass is required; regular admission fees apply as of 8 September 2026, with 7 September the last day of free admission.
- Plan to be offline north of Lake Louise. Parks Canada says the 232 km Icefields Parkway to Jasper has no cell coverage and tells drivers to download trip resources before setting out.
- Parkway services run from early May to mid-October, with one summer-only gas station at Saskatchewan River Crossing. In winter the 232 km between Lake Louise and Jasper have no fuel, no hotels or restaurants and no cell coverage.
- None of the campgrounds on the Icefields Parkway has cell phone coverage, and several other Banff park campgrounds list only limited coverage, so agree meeting times before you split up.
- Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles all year. You get there on a reserved Parks Canada shuttle, running May to October, or with a licensed commercial operator. Extra shuttle seats are released at 8 a.m. Mountain time two days before departure.
- Shuttle ticket holders park at the Lake Louise Park and Ride at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. You may drive to Lake Louise itself, but Parks Canada warns that finding a space is unlikely and parking is paid from May to October.
- Roam's Route 8X express leaves from the Banff High School Transit Hub downtown for Lake Louise Village and the Lake Louise lakeshore. The 2026 adult fare is $12.50, children 12 and under ride free, and reservations are recommended from May to October.
- Roam tickets are sold in the Token Transit and Transit apps, from vending machines and at the Banff Visitor Centre at 224 Banff Ave, or for exact cash on board with no change given. The Transit app also tracks buses live.
- A paid regional Roam ride, such as Canmore to Banff on Route 3, includes a free 60 minute transfer onto the Banff and Canmore local buses.
