Worth knowing about Punta Cana
- You cannot buy a local SIM inside the terminal: the airport's FAQ says it does not sell them and points to shops at Blue Mall PUNTACANA roughly 5 minutes away arrive with an eSIM already installed or you land offline.
- Punta Cana International is privately owned and operated by Corporación Aeroportuaria del Este (Grupo Puntacana), which built it in 1984 the western hemisphere's first privately owned international airport.
- The terminals are open-air with roofs covered in palm fronds, so arrivals and departures happen in outdoor humidity rather than a sealed air-conditioned hall.
- It is a very large leisure gateway despite the resort setting: 11,006,110 passengers in 2025, handled through two international terminals, A and B.
- Under CESAC security rules, vapes and electronic cigarettes may enter and leave the Dominican Republic, but only in hand luggage, never in checked bags.
- A dog or cat needs a vet health certificate and current vaccinations, plus a US$10 cash entry fee paid to Agriculture after customs, and the same fee again at the Agriculture counter before check-in on departure.
