Underground and on the metro
Cairo Metro runs 3 lines. It opened in 1987. The operator does not publish whether the tunnels carry a mobile signal, so we do not claim either way.
Worth knowing about Cairo
- The Cairo Metro's first section opened on 27 September 1987, making it the first full metro system in Africa and the first in the Middle East; three lines are in operation.
- The metro does not reach Cairo International Airport: the Line 3 Phase 4C extension from Heliopolis to the airport is still under study with no proposed completion date, so arrivals use limousines, taxis or the bus station in front of Terminal 1.
- A free Automated People Mover links Terminal 1, the Air Mall, the car park, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 over a 1,857 m route in at most five minutes, operating 18 hours a day.
- Egypt's regulator NTRA tightened mobile line registration in August 2026: bulk activation of new lines for companies and entities was suspended, existing holders were told to re-sign contracts in the actual user's name or lose the line, and biometric identity verification is being rolled out through operator apps.
