Underground and on the metro
Mumbai Metro runs 4 lines. It opened in 2014. The operator does not publish whether the tunnels carry a mobile signal, so we do not claim either way.
Worth knowing about Mumbai
- Mumbai airport wifi accepts an international mobile number for the OTP, not just an Indian one, which is unusual in India. If no number can receive the text, an Information Desk or Wi-Fi Kiosk verifies a passport instead.
- The Aqua Line, Line 3, is the first fully underground metro line in Mumbai. It runs 33.5 km with 27 stations from Cuffe Parade in the far south to Aarey JVLR.
- The Terminal 2 metro station opened on 7 October 2024, sits about 30 m below ground and is joined to the terminal by a 100 m footbridge.
- The airport's listed SIM counter is Airtel at Level 2 arrivals in Terminal 2.
- Mumbai Metro opened on 8 June 2014 and had about 101 km in service across four lines by April 2026.
- The Mumbai One app, launched in October 2025, sells a single ticket valid across 11 operators, including suburban trains, metro lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7, the monorail and BEST buses.
- Mumbai One also shows live delays, alternative routes and estimated arrival times, and includes an SOS button for commuter safety.
- The final stretch of the underground Aqua Line, Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, opened on 8 October 2025, putting Fort, Kala Ghoda, Marine Drive and Nariman Point on the same line as the airport's Terminal 2 station.
- Navi Mumbai International Airport, the region's second international airport, was inaugurated on 8 October 2025. It is planned to handle 90 million passengers a year eventually and to be the first airport in India reached by water taxi.
- Metered auto rickshaws work at both terminals but only in the suburbs, from Borivali to Bandra in the west and up to Sion in the centre. For South Mumbai, take a taxi, app cab or the metro.
- The nearest suburban railway stations are Vile Parle East for the domestic terminal and Andheri East for the international terminal. BEST route 312 runs to Vile Parle and route 321 serves the international terminal.
- Marol Naka, on Metro Line 1 between Versova and Ghatkopar, is the Line 1 station closest to Terminal 2, for connections across the western and eastern suburbs.
