Worth knowing about Jurmala
- Non-residents pay a road toll to cross the Lielupe bridge and drive into Jūrmala, so the train is often the simpler arrival.
- Jūrmala has no airport of its own; Riga International is about 18 km from central Jūrmala at Majori.
- The city is strung along a double-track electrified railway with 13 stations, ten of them within walking distance of the beach, so 'Jūrmala' is a 13-station strip rather than a single centre.
- Jūrmala lies about 25 km west of Riga, connected by the six-lane A10 / E22.
- Free municipal wifi runs at 11 public sites in Jurmala under the network name WiFi4EU Jurmala free. Selecting that network is the only step: no registration and no phone number.
- The WiFi4EU points include the Tourism Information Centre at Lienes iela 5, the Jurmala City Museum, Aspazija House and the Dubulti cultural quarter, at speeds up to 100 Mbit per second.
- A European Commission WiFi4EU grant of 15,000 euro paid for the equipment, and every hotspot is backhauled over the city council's own optical fibre network.
- From 1 January 2026 the entry toll is 5 euro for a day, 20 euro for a week and 270 euro for a year. Electric vehicles and vehicles adapted for disabled drivers are exempt.
- The toll machines stopped taking cash. Pay online, by card at the eight machines, at the Tourism Information Centre, or in the Mobilly, Snabb, Citadele or EuroPark apps.
- The day pass can be bought at any time on the day you enter, including after you have already driven in, up to 23:59.
- Trains for Jurmala leave Riga Central Station from tracks 3 and 4 on platform 4. The ride takes 20 to 50 minutes and costs 2.30 to 2.80 euro.
- Rail e-tickets are bought on vivi.lv or in the Vivi Latvija app, paid by Visa, Mastercard, bank link, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and shown as an Aztec code that changes, so time tickets must stay in the app.
- You can still buy a train ticket from the on board conductor with a card or cash, though a 1.00 euro surcharge applies if the ticket office at your boarding station was open.
- Riga bus drivers stopped selling tickets on 1 January 2022. Route 22, the airport bus, is the exception where the driver still takes bank payment cards.
- Night bus N22 links Stacijas laukums with Riga Airport hourly, leaving the centre from 00:00 to 04:00 and the airport from 00:30 to 04:30, with drivers accepting bank cards.
- Kemeri National Park covers 36,184 hectares, was established in 1997 and extends into Jurmala itself. It is both a Natura 2000 site and a Ramsar wetland.
- Jurmala is a balneological and climatic resort with a 24 km beach, 11 maintained bathing areas, and about a third of its area under forest.
- A draft law approved by the Latvian Cabinet would let operators activate newly sold prepaid SIMs only after identifying the user, from 1 October 2026. It still needs Saeima approval.
