Worth knowing about Lilongwe
- Kamuzu International Airport lies north of the city and opened in 1983, built between 1977 and 1982 after the capital moved to Lilongwe in 1975. Its terminal buildings were rehabilitated with Japanese funding and handed back to the Government of Malawi in April 2019.
- Lilongwe is two places rather than one. The City Centre holds government offices and the diplomatic missions; the Old Town holds the markets and the bus terminals, which is where long distance and international coaches leave from.
- Regular buses run from Lilongwe to Blantyre, Zomba, Kasungu and Mzuzu, and international coaches to South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania leave daily.
- Malawi Airlines hubs at Kamuzu International, with Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Airlink, Proflight Zambia and Ulendo Airlink also serving it, plus Emirates SkyCargo and Astral Aviation on the freight side.
