Worth knowing about Nouakchott
- The airport moved and the transfer got longer. Nouakchott-Oumtounsy opened on 23 June 2016 some 25 km north of the city, replacing the old Nouakchott International Airport, which stood in the city centre itself. An arrival that used to end downtown now starts with a 25 km drive.
- The airport is connected to the city by Sheikh Zayed Road; the terminal covers 30,000 square metres with six jet bridges and is built for 2 million passengers a year.
- Two long paved roads leave Nouakchott: the Cairo to Dakar highway leg north to Nouadhibou, completed in 2004, and the Route de l'Espoir, 1,100 km inland through Boutilimit and Kiffa to Nema.
- A tramway for Nouakchott was presented in July 2022 but has no scheduled opening date, so the city's public transport remains vehicles running the main boulevards.
