Worth knowing about Queenstown
- Queenstown Airport works under a 10pm noise abatement curfew, so late diversions and delays push arrivals to the next morning.
- The approach is one of the hardest in Australasia because of the high terrain around the airport, and it got an engineered materials arrestor system in March 2025.
- Queenstown has no railway at all; the only road in is State Highway 6 through the Kawarau Gorge.
- Orbus buses in Queenstown take only cash or a Bee Card. Otago Regional Council states that bank and credit cards cannot be used on buses to pay a bus fare.
- Cash costs far more than a Bee Card on Orbus trips to or from Queenstown Airport. Otago Regional Council lists an adult cash fare of $10 against $2.50 on a Bee Card.
- Otago has not moved to the national Motu Move ticketing system. Under a heading Motu Move 2027, Otago Regional Council says Otago is not changing over just yet, so the Bee Card still applies.
- One Bee Card covers several regions. Otago Regional Council lists Northland, Waikato, Gisborne, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Taranaki, Manawatū-Whanganui, Nelson, Otago and Invercargill.
- You can buy a Bee Card at the Paper Plus store inside the Queenstown Airport terminal, or at the Otago Regional Council office in Frankton during business hours.
- Queenstown Airport says buses generally run every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes in the evening, from clearly signposted stops outside the terminal near arrivals and departures.
- Queenstown Airport calls itself New Zealand's fourth busiest airport. It sits in Frankton, just 8 km from the Queenstown town centre.
- The Department of Conservation states there is no cellphone coverage on the Routeburn Track, and lists a personal locator beacon among the gear to carry.
- Crown Saddle on the Crown Range Road between Arrowtown and Wanaka reaches 1,076 metres. A plaque at the vista point claims it is the highest sealed road in New Zealand.
- Orbus runs five Queenstown routes: 1 Sunshine Bay to Remarkables Shops, 2 Frankton Hub to Arrowtown, 3 Kelvin Heights to Quail Rise, 4 Jacks Point to Arrowtown, 5 Lake Hayes Estate to Queenstown.
