Worth knowing about Port Vila
- Bauerfield is effectively the only routine way into Port Vila: Wikivoyage reports that landslides caused by the December 2024 earthquake have left the main cruise terminal unreachable, so cruise ships now tender passengers ashore instead of berthing.
- The magnitude 7.3 earthquake of 17 December 2024 damaged Bauerfield's runway and terminal building; the airport closed to non-humanitarian flights for 72 hours and resumed commercial operations on 22 December 2024 after repairs.
- Vanuatu keeps a single time zone, Vanuatu Time (UTC+11) year-round with no daylight saving; it last observed DST between 1983 and 3 May 1993. Set expectations accordingly against Fiji, which is an hour further ahead.
- Vanuatu's regulator TRBR renewed the telecom licences of Vodafone Vanuatu (formerly Telecom Vanuatu Limited) and Digicel Vanuatu for a further 15 years in 2023 - these are the two mobile networks a roaming eSIM will find on Efate.
- Bauerfield sits about 7 km north of Port Vila town; airport taxis run on fixed fares and a public bus can be caught from the main road outside the terminal.
