Which network you get
| Carrier | Role | 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Proximus | Primary, used by default | yes, non standalone |
| Orange | Failover, used when the primary degrades | yes, non standalone |
You do not choose between them. If the network you are on gets congested we move you to the other one automatically, in the middle of your trip, and tell you afterwards.
About these figures
The speed figures on this page show the typical download speed and the speed when the network is busy, for the country as a whole and for its main cities.
What the Belgium numbers mean
Two numbers matter and only one of them is the one every seller quotes. The typical speed, 77 Mbps, tells you what a good moment looks like.
The tenth percentile, 21 Mbps, is the one that matters. It is the speed in the worst tenth of the day, when the cell above the station is full and everybody around you is on it too. A country with a high median and a low floor is a country that works beautifully right up until the moment you actually need it.
If the trip depends on video calls or tethering, plan around the busy figure rather than the typical one.
What happens in Belgium when the network is busy
Congestion is not a fault, it is a Tuesday evening. The question is what your eSIM can do about it, and for most travel eSIMs the answer is nothing: one wholesale agreement per country, one network, and no way out except buying a second eSIM from somebody else while standing in the street.
Here, Orbislo traffic runs over Proximus and Orange. When the network you are on degrades we move you to another one, mid trip, without you asking, and tell you afterwards rather than interrupting you at the time.
Older networks in Belgium
- Orange, Proximus and Telenet/BASE have confirmed that their Belgian 2G networks will be shut down in the course of 2028 and 2029, with each operator announcing its own exact dates, according to the regulator BIPT.
- Proximus switched off its Belgian 3G network in 2025 to free spectrum for 4G and 5G, and older devices on Proximus can still call and text over 2G until that network closes.
5G in Belgium
- After Belgium's 2022 multi band auction, BIPT granted 3600 MHz rights to Citymesh Mobile, Network Research Belgium, Orange Belgium, Proximus and Telenet Group, and 700 MHz rights to Citymesh, Orange, Proximus and Telenet.
- The same 2022 auction brought Citymesh Mobile into the Belgian mobile market alongside Orange, Proximus and Telenet, with rights in the 900, 1800 and 2100 MHz bands as well as for 5G.
