Which network you get
| Carrier | Role | 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Telia | Primary, used by default | yes, non standalone |
| Tele2 | Failover, used when the primary degrades | yes, non standalone |
You do not choose between them. If the network you are on gets congested we move you to the other one automatically, in the middle of your trip, and tell you afterwards.
About these figures
The speed figures on this page show the typical download speed and the speed when the network is busy, for the country as a whole and for its main cities.
What the Sweden numbers mean
Two numbers matter and only one of them is the one every seller quotes. The typical speed, 91 Mbps, tells you what a good moment looks like.
The tenth percentile, 29 Mbps, is the one that matters. It is the speed in the worst tenth of the day, when the cell above the station is full and everybody around you is on it too. A country with a high median and a low floor is a country that works beautifully right up until the moment you actually need it.
If the trip depends on video calls or tethering, plan around the busy figure rather than the typical one.
What happens in Sweden when the network is busy
Congestion is not a fault, it is a Tuesday evening. The question is what your eSIM can do about it, and for most travel eSIMs the answer is nothing: one wholesale agreement per country, one network, and no way out except buying a second eSIM from somebody else while standing in the street.
Here, Orbislo traffic runs over Telia and Tele2. When the network you are on degrades we move you to another one, mid trip, without you asking, and tell you afterwards rather than interrupting you at the time.
Older networks in Sweden
- Tele2 and Telenor shut down both their 2G and 3G networks in Sweden during 2025, and Telia and Tre shut down 3G in the same period, according to the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).
- Telia has announced it will keep its Swedish 2G network running until the end of 2027, so for now Telia is the only network in Sweden where a phone that needs 2G can still connect.
- PTS opened an urgent review of how Tre, Telenor and Tele2 route 112 emergency calls after it learned that some phones would be unable to reach 112 once the 2G and 3G networks closed in December 2025.
5G in Sweden
- Sweden sets no specific requirements on operators for building 5G: where and how fast it is rolled out is left to the market, while coverage obligations are attached to particular frequency bands instead, PTS explains.
Network notes for Sweden
- PTS concluded that Sweden's 2G and 3G phase out ran without major incidents, but noted reports of locally reduced coverage in some areas after the switch and said it would keep monitoring them.
