- Kazbegi is officially Stepantsminda, a townlet of 1,326 people at the 2014 census, sitting at 1,740 m on the Terek river 157 km north of Tbilisi.
- The Larsi crossing into Russia is about 12 km north of the town and open 24 hours, but nobody may cross it on foot.
- Gergeti Trinity Church, the town's landmark, stands at 2,170 m on the right bank of the Chkheri below Mount Kazbek.
- Mount Kazbek, in the Lateral Range of the Greater Caucasus, rises immediately west of the town.
- When avalanche danger is declared on the Gudauri to Kobi section of the Mtskheta, Stepantsminda and Larsi road, the police close it to all vehicles and even snow clearing stops, so winter trips to Kazbegi can be cut off without notice.
