Caracas Metro runs 0 lines. It opened in 1983. The operator states mobile coverage in parts of the network only.
Worth knowing about Caracas
- The airport is at Maiquetia on the coast and Caracas is about 21 km inland at roughly 936 metres, so every road in climbs the coastal range. The Caracas to La Guaira highway does it through two sets of twin tunnels at Boqueron, the first 1,910 metres and the second 497 metres, plus three viaducts.
- That road has failed before. Viaduct 1 was closed as a precaution on 5 January 2006, cutting Caracas off from the coast; the span collapsed on 19 March 2006 and the replacement did not open until 21 June 2007. Traffic ran on a narrow, steep detour in between.
- Twin earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on 24 June 2026 damaged the runway and terminals at Maiquetia. The airport handled humanitarian flights only for several weeks, cargo resumed on 5 August 2026, and passengers are being processed in tents, two provisional departure terminals and two for arrivals, while the airport works back towards 40 percent of its former capacity. Check the position before you book.
- With Maiquetia shut to commercial traffic after the June 2026 earthquakes, national and international services were suspended there and some flights were moved to Barcelona and Valencia instead.
- The Caracas Metro opened in 1983 and has 48 stations, but by 2022 only 23 of its 169 trains were running. Delays are the normal condition, not the exception.
- La Rinconada on Metro Line 3 is the interchange with the Libertador Simon Bolivar railway station, for the suburban trains to Charallave and Cua, and Las Adjuntas on Line 1 is where the Los Teques Metro begins.
