Worth knowing about Maracaibo
- La Chinita is not in Maracaibo. It is southwest of the city in the neighbouring municipality of San Francisco, and it operates 24 hours a day.
- The airport has a 3,000 metre main runway and a 2,500 metre second strip that normally works as a taxiway and is opened as a runway when the main one is closed.
- Maracaibo is joined to the rest of the country by the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge, 8.678 km of prestressed concrete across the Tablazo Strait. It carries vehicles only, with no rail deck and no footway, and it has been the single road link since it opened on 24 August 1962.
- The Maracaibo Metro is one light rail line of about 6.9 km with nine stations, two of them elevated. It covers a corridor out to the suburbs rather than the city as a whole.
- La Chinita was built in eight months and opened on 16 November 1969, after the Viasa Flight 742 crash that March closed the old Grano de Oro airport, which sat too close to the city centre.
