Getting into Hoi An

Worth knowing about Hoi An
- Hoi An has no airport of its own. The nearest is Da Nang International Airport (DAD), 28 km to the north, about a 40 minute drive; Chu Lai International Airport is an alternative 73 km to the south.
- Vietnam's national tourism board measures Hoi An Ancient Town at 29 kilometres from Da Nang airport and Hue at 98 kilometres, and states that all international airports in Vietnam have free WiFi.
- Heading north from Hoi An to Hue, National Route 1 passes through the 6,280 m Hai Van Tunnel between Da Nang and Hue, opened 5 June 2005, which saves between 30 minutes and an hour over the old Hai Van Pass road.
- Hoi An Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999; road access from Da Nang runs via National Route 14B and Provincial Road 607 or the coastal road, and a waterway link via the Co Co River is being developed.
- Hoi An no longer sits in Quang Nam province. The 2025 administrative reform merged Quang Nam into Da Nang, and official addresses now read Hoi An ward, Da Nang city.
- Vietnam's tourism board puts An Bang Beach about a 10 minute drive from the Ancient Town and the My Son temple sanctuary 40 kilometres away, and suggests walking or cycling for the town itself, with taxis and ride-hailing apps for longer hops.
- Expect rainy days and several storms from October to January, according to the tourism board, which names March to May as the best months. The riverside area around Nguyen Thai Hoc street often floods in the rainy season, and residents take boats to get about.
- Da Nang airport lists Hai Van Bus as its suburban service to Hoi An, running daily from 07:30 to 16:00 at 120,000 dong a trip. Stops are at columns 7 and 8 of the international terminal and column 2 of the domestic one.
- Metered taxis wait outside both arrivals halls at Da Nang airport around the clock. The airport advises carrying cash, since only a few companies such as Tien Sa and VinaSun take Visa or Mastercard, and an access fee of 10,000 to 30,000 dong may be added.
- The Danabus city routes 06 and 12 that serve Da Nang airport stay inside Da Nang and stop at 19:00, so they are no help for reaching Hoi An after a late landing.
