- Most travellers reach Samarkand overland: the Afrosiyob high-speed service run by Uzbekistan Railways covers Tashkent-Samarkand in roughly 2 hours 8 minutes at up to 250 km/h, and commercial service began on 8 October 2011.
- Samarkand reopened a modern electric tram network on 29 March 2017, the first trams in the city since the Soviet-era system closed in 1973; it now has two lines and 26 stops, both radiating from the main railway station.
- Samarkand's railway station is about 5 km northwest of the city centre and the airport about 6 km north, so arrivals by air and by Afrosiyob land on opposite sides of town; buses M1, 31 and 52 link airport Arrivals to the station hourly.
- Samarkand's current passenger terminal is new: it was officially inaugurated on 18 March 2022, replacing the older Soviet-era terminal.
