- Botswana's tourism board calls Maun the country's tourism capital. It sits on the southern edge of the Okavango Delta, is the administrative centre of Ngamiland, and has been the seat of the Batawana people since 1915.
- Maun is officially still a village, but it had 85,293 residents in 2022 and has spread along the banks of the Thamalakane River. The A3 highway links it to Francistown.
- Most traffic at Maun's airport is light aircraft flying to and from the Delta. On average, every scheduled airliner that lands generates six light aircraft movements as passengers transfer to the camps.
- The terminal was renovated from 2019, adding a larger departure hall, bigger international and domestic baggage areas, new check in counters, new flight information displays and more paved parking.
- Access to Maun's airport is not allowed at night or outside operating hours, and security screens every departing passenger. Liquids in hand luggage are limited to 100 ml in a sealed security bag.
- Moremi Game Reserve, proclaimed by the Batawana in 1963, is the only officially protected area of the Okavango Delta. It covers about 3,900 sq km and is a favourite with self drive campers, especially at Third Bridge.
- The Delta swells from about 15,000 sq km in dry periods to 22,000 sq km in wet ones, and trips from Maun into it are often by mokoro, the traditional dug out canoe.
- Charter operators flying out of Maun include Moremi Air, Mack Air, Delta Air, Kavango Air, Wilderness Air and Helicopter Horizons.
