Da sapere su Exuma
- Exuma non è una singola città ma un distretto delle Bahamas di oltre 365 tra isole e isolotti; George Town, su Great Exuma, ne è il capoluogo e il centro più grande, con una popolazione di poche migliaia di abitanti.
- Great Exuma e Little Exuma sono unite da un piccolo ponte; il resto della catena si raggiunge solo in barca o con piccoli aerei charter.
- Exuma International Airport riceve voli diretti da Miami, Charlotte, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale e Toronto oltre che da Nassau, quindi non è obbligatorio passare da Nassau.
- Staniel Cay e Black Point, negli isolotti settentrionali, hanno piccole piste proprie servite da operatori charter e di linea, separate dall'aeroporto principale di Exuma.
- Il terminal dell'aeroporto è così piccolo che i passeggeri salgono a bordo dal piazzale con la scaletta, ed è in costruzione un terminal sostitutivo.
- Taxis wait outside arrivals at Exuma International and charge fixed fares by zone, so confirm the price with the driver before setting off. Many resorts also offer transfers if you book ahead.
- Allow at least two hours before an international departure. The terminal has basic free Wi-Fi but little food or drink, and it pays to carry some cash in Bahamian or US dollars.
- Traffic keeps left on Exuma and hire cars are often right-hand drive. The roads are getting better but still have plenty of potholes and hazards.
- Bahamas Ferries sails from Nassau to George Town on Mondays, but for now only as a freight service, and it does not go to Big Major Cay, home of the swimming pigs.
- Staniel Cay Airport is an official port of entry with customs and immigration, so arrivals can clear into The Bahamas in the Exuma Cays rather than on Great Exuma.
- Big Major Cay, the swimming pig beach, is reachable only by boat and is a short hop from Staniel Cay. The tourism ministry asks visitors to look but not touch.
- Thunderball Grotto, the underwater cave just west of Staniel Cay, has a hidden entrance that swimmers can pass through at low tide.
- Stocking Island lies across the harbour from George Town and is reached by your own boat or a water taxi from town. Its beach bar, Chat 'N' Chill, can only be reached by boat.
- Tropic of Cancer Beach, named for its position on that line of latitude, is the longest beach on Little Exuma, which is joined to Great Exuma by a bridge.
- The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, founded in 1958, was the first marine reserve in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. It covers 112,640 acres, and no fishing, shelling or conching of any kind is allowed.
- The park office sits on remote Warderick Wells and can be hard to reach. Boaters call "Exuma Park" on VHF channel 09, and channel 16 is monitored 24 hours a day for emergencies.
- Park wardens and Royal Bahamas Defence Force officers stationed at Warderick Wells keep up constant patrols, and visitors are asked to report poaching on channel 09.
