- Valparaiso non ha un aeroporto commerciale proprio: si atterra a Santiago (SCL), a 120 km, e poi ci vogliono circa 1 ora e 30 minuti in auto sulla Route 68 oppure quasi 2 ore in autobus dai terminal Alameda o Pajaritos.
- La "Metro" locale non è una metropolitana: la linea Limache-Puerto (Merval) è un'unica ferrovia suburbana di 43 km con 20 stazioni che collega cinque città, e comprende un tratto sotterraneo di 5 km da Miramar attraverso Chorrillos, a Vina del Mar.
- Spostarsi tra il porto e le colline significa prendere le funicolari: ne sopravvivono 16, chiamate ascensores, 15 delle quali pubbliche e dichiarate monumento nazionale, e nel 1996 il World Monuments Fund ha inserito il sistema tra i 100 tesori storici più a rischio al mondo.

- At Limache the train meets buses to Quillota, Limache Viejo and La Calera at no extra charge: leave through the dedicated transfer turnstiles within 120 minutes, using the card you started with.
- TurBus runs direct coaches from Vina del Mar and Valparaiso to Santiago airport, with six departures Monday to Saturday from 05:30 and six on Sundays, so you avoid changing at a Santiago terminal.
- Chile's tourism board advises sticking to lit, busy streets at night, or taking safe transport between the hills and the centre, and picks the Reina Victoria and El Peral ascensores for their views over the bay.
- Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion hold the city's cobbled lanes, painted houses and galleries, and La Sebastiana, Pablo Neruda's house museum, sits on the hills above the port.
