The airport was renamed Accra International Airport in February 2026, going back to the name it opened under in 1958. Its IATA code stays ACC.
Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, whose name the airport carried from 1969, was killed in a failed coup at a spot that is now the airport forecourt.
Accra is a landing point for the SAT-3/WASC submarine cable, in service since 2001, and for 2Africa, a 45,000 km system whose Accra landing is operated by Bayobab of the MTN Group.
Ghana requires SIM cards to be registered. A non resident foreigner registers with a passport or ECOWAS card presented to the operator's agent, and is validated against an approved database rather than the national ID system.
