Tegucigalpa's international flights no longer land in the city. Every international carrier moved to Palmerola in December 2021, leaving Toncontin with domestic and cargo traffic only.
Palmerola opened on 15 October 2021 on the site of Soto Cano Air Base, about 60 km northwest of Tegucigalpa city centre, near Comayagua.
Toncontin is only 6 km from the centre but has a single 2,163 m runway, and the History Channel programme Most Extreme Airports ranked it the second most extreme airport in the world.
