케냐에서 33 Mbps가 실제로 뜻하는 것
케냐에서 Orbislo를 쓸 때 일반적인 다운로드 속도: 33 Mbps. 아프리카 중앙값 30 Mbps와 거의 같은 수준이에요. 다시 말해 케냐에서는 연결을 딱히 의식할 일이 없다는 뜻이고, 좋은 의미로 그래요.

케냐에서 Orbislo는 Safaricom 및 Airtel 망으로 트래픽을 보내요. 휴대폰이 둘 중 하나에 묶이지 않아요. 붙어 있던 망이 혼잡해지거나 끊기면 프로파일이 다른 쪽으로 옮겨 줘요. 확인 창도 없고, 연결이 계속 살아 있었다는 결과 말고는 알아챌 것도 없어요.
이건 겉으로 보이는 속도보다 중요해요. 지금 팔리는 여행용 eSIM은 거의 모두 나라별로 제휴 계약 하나를 되파는 구조라, 그 망이 한 시간 상태가 나쁘면 그 시간을 그대로 같이 겪고, 방법은 다른 회사 eSIM을 하나 더 사는 것뿐이에요. 뒤에 망이 여러 개 있는 프로파일은 사용자가 보지 못하는 곳에서 판단을 내릴 수 있어요.

케냐의 데이터 요금
케냐용 100 MB 요금제는 ₩0부터이고, 1 기가에 ₩0예요. 업체를 비교할 때 볼 숫자는 이거예요. 용량이 다른 요금제에 붙은 표시 가격은 아무것도 알려 주지 않으니까요.
대부분의 업체가 굳이 시켜 보고 싶어 하지 않는 비교가 실제로 쓴 기가당 단가예요. 여행 데이터에 관한 독립 조사들은 구매한 데이터 가운데 유효기간으로 사라지는 비율을 20에서 35 퍼센트로 봐요. 30일에 만료되는 요금제는 다 쓰지 못한 몫을 그냥 지우니까요. Orbislo 데이터에는 만료일이 없어서, 돈을 낸 기가는 다음 여행에도 그대로 남아 있어요. 같은 표시 가격이라면 실제로 쓸 수 있는 데이터가 25에서 40 퍼센트 늘어나는 셈이고, 케냐에서는 실질 단가가 1 기가 ₩0보다 ₩0에 가까워진다는 뜻이에요.
만료가 없으니 케냐용으로는 필요하다고 생각하는 양보다 조금 적게 사고 모자라면 충전하는 게 가장 싸요. 충전은 10초쯤 걸리고 따로 설치할 것도 없어요. 많이 사 두는 건 다른 데서는 비싼 실수지만 여기서는 손해도 이득도 아니에요.
케냐에 도착하면
출발 전에 집 WLAN에서 설치하세요. 믿을 만한 연결이 있을 때 프로파일을 내려받아 두면, 케냐에 내려 Safaricom 망에 붙을 때까지 조용히 대기만 해요.
내려서 확인할 건 하나뿐이에요. Orbislo 회선에서 데이터 로밍을 켜야 해요. iOS와 안드로이드 모두 기본값이 꺼짐이고, 여기서 말하는 로밍은 요금과 아무 상관이 없어요. 선불 요금제라 올라갈 청구서 자체가 없거든요. Orbislo 회선만 켜고 원래 쓰던 회선은 꺼 두면, 평소 번호로 전화와 은행 인증 코드를 그대로 받으면서 돈은 들지 않아요.

Kenya's SIM registration rules require the operator to retain a copy of the identification document of every subscriber, which is why the counter asks for the original and takes a copy before the line works.
케냐에서 제한되는 것
- Documents a foreigner registers with: Under subscriber registration regulations published in May 2025, a foreigner registers a Kenyan line with a valid passport or a Foreign National Registration Certificate. The operator or its agent must authenticate the document against the relevant government database before registering the line.
- No registering a line for someone else: Kenyan law bans proxy registration of SIM cards. The only exception is a parent or guardian registering a line for a child, so each adult in a travelling group has to register their own line on their own document.
- False registration details: Knowingly giving false information to register a line is an offence punishable by a fine of up to one million shillings, up to six months in prison, or both. An operator must deactivate a line once it establishes that false registration details were used.
- Handset IMEI whitelisting: From 1 January 2025 Kenya began whitelisting handsets by IMEI for tax compliance, but a phone running on a foreign number while roaming needs no declaration, and the revenue authority says tourists and short term visitors are not affected. Visitors who buy a local SIM get a support process for device compliance.
- Telegram during school exams: Telegram was blocked on Safaricom and Jambonet networks during the national secondary school exams (KCSE), from 8 to 24 November 2023 and again from 7 to 22 November 2024. A visitor in Kenya during the November exam weeks should not rely on Telegram.
- Telegram during 2025 exams: NetBlocks reported Telegram restricted again during the 2025 KCSE exams. Its tests found Telegram completely unreachable on Safaricom, while on Airtel it connected only 42 to 45 percent of the time.
- Protest day disruption, June 2024: On 25 June 2024, during protests against the Finance Bill, internet traffic across Kenya dropped from about 4:25 pm and only partly recovered at 11:40 pm. Operators blamed undersea cable faults, while the digital rights coalition that published the traffic data said the evidence pointed to a deliberate disruption.

- In May 2025 the High Court ordered the government, the Communications Authority and others not to carry out any internet shutdown, throttling or interference with social media, telephony and data services until a case brought by seven civil society groups is decided.
- In July 2026 the High Court ruled that authorities cannot have websites blocked without a court order, striking down a provision of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, 2025 that let the national cybercrimes committee order internet providers to block sites and apps.
- Telephone and internet data services bought in Kenya carry excise duty of 15 percent of their excisable value, the rate set by the Excise Duty Act as last amended in 2023.
- Fees for sending money through a mobile phone provider's money transfer service carry a separate excise duty of 15 percent of their excisable value under the same Act, separate from the duty on telephone and data services.
- On Safaricom prepaid, an account expires once it has been inactive for 120 days after the validity of the last recharge ends. Any airtime balance is then forfeited, M-Pesa balances excepted, and the number can be recycled and sold to another customer.
- Kenya's emergency numbers are 112 and 999, and Safaricom's prepaid conditions list both as emergency access numbers included in its prepaid service.
- Kenya is a founding member of the East African One Network Area, launched for voice in January 2015 with Rwanda, Uganda and South Sudan. Tanzania joined in July 2023 and Burundi in August 2024, while the DR Congo and Somalia were still being encouraged to join in late 2024.
- Under the One Network Area, a subscriber from a member state pays nothing to receive calls while roaming in another member state, which matters for visitors from Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan or Burundi who keep their home SIM active in Kenya.
