Why the app and your phone will never agree

They are counting two different things. Your phone counts every byte since a reset date you chose, including wifi on some builds, and it counts what the radio attempted. We count what the network actually billed, reconciled every 60 seconds. The two are always a little apart and neither is lying. When they disagree, the billed number is the one your balance moves on.

Why we print the timestamp

Because a usage figure with no time on it is a guess presented as a fact. Ours reconciles with the network every 60 seconds and the screen tells you when it last did. If you are on a train through a tunnel, the number can be a few minutes old and you can see that it is, rather than wondering.

When the number moves and you were not using the phone

Background traffic, in almost every case. Four things account for most of it and all four are worth turning off before a trip.

  • Automatic photo and video backup over mobile data
  • App updates over mobile data
  • Mail fetching in the background on a short interval
  • OS updates, which will take a gigabyte without asking twice

Which number to believe

SourceWhat it countsHow current it is
The Orbislo appWhat the network billed against your balanceReconciled every 60 seconds, with the timestamp shown
iOS Settings, CellularEverything since a reset you chose, per appLive, but it never matches a billed total
Android data usageEverything in the current billing cycle it thinks you are inLive, and the cycle is usually wrong for a travel eSIM
Your bank statementMoney, not dataNot a usage source at all

Reset the phone's own counter at the start of each trip if you want the two to track each other roughly.

What we do automatically and what needs you

We reconcile every 60 seconds, show the timestamp, and estimate how many days are left at your own historical rate rather than at an average traveller's. We do not throttle a metered plan at any point, so a slowing connection is never us managing your usage quietly. What needs you is turning off backup over cellular, which is the single biggest cause of a plan emptying in a morning.

The numbers, and where they came from

Most people use 3 to 5 GB on a week long trip without streaming. The days remaining estimate uses your own past trips where we have them, and falls back to that range where we do not. A gigabyte costs $4.89 at the smallest tier and $1.36 a gigabyte at 50 GB, so a mid trip top up is a small decision rather than a large one.

Making a plan last, in order of effect

If the balance is going faster than the trip is, these four changes account for most of the difference, and they are ordered by how much they save.

  • Turn off photo and video backup over mobile data. This is the single biggest one and it is not close.
  • Turn off app updates over mobile data, and update everything on wifi before you fly.
  • Download maps for the city offline before you leave. Navigation itself is small, map tiles are not.
  • Set streaming apps to a lower quality over cellular, which most of them offer and none of them default to.

자주 묻는 질문

Why does the app say more than my phone?
Because we count what the network billed and your phone counts from a reset date you picked. Reset the phone counter on the day you land and the two will track much more closely, though they will never be identical.
Does checking my usage use data?
A trivial amount, and it works over the free rescue data if you have nothing else. You will not run a balance down by looking at it.
How accurate is the days remaining estimate?
It is built from your own rate on past trips, so it improves after your first trip with us and is a range rather than a promise before that. It is an estimate and we label it as one.
Can I set an alert before I run out?
Yes, and you can set a cap for each person you pool with. The alert fires on the billed figure, not on the phone's own counter, so it does not fire early or late.
My usage jumped overnight. What happened?
Almost always photo backup or an OS update over mobile data. The app shows usage by day so you can see which night it was, and turning off backup over cellular before you fly prevents it happening again.
Does the balance update when I am offline?
The figure you see is the last reconciled one, and the timestamp tells you when that was. It catches up within about 60 seconds of the connection returning.
Why is my first day always the heaviest?
Because everything you did not do on wifi at home queues up and runs the moment the phone has data. Update apps and back up photos before you leave and the first day looks like the rest.
