- Hvar is an island with no airport: every arrival is by sea, on a car ferry or a fast catamaran.
- The island has two separate mainland gateways - most visitors reach Stari Grad by car ferry from Split, while Sucuraj at the far eastern end is linked to Drvenik.
- Fast catamarans into Hvar town run daily only in the tourist season, roughly early April to mid-October; outside it the connections thin out.
- Hvar town's port also links to Brac, Korcula, Lastovo and Vis, so island-hopping here is a sea network rather than a road one.
