Georgetownで知っておきたいこと
- Georgetown は満潮面より 2 m 低い土地にも広がっています。防潮堤が大西洋の海水を防ぎ、koker と呼ばれる水門を備えた運河網が市内の水を排出します。
- ガイアナの 2 つの空港は役割が分かれています。Cheddi Jagan は南 41 km の Timehri にあり、東 6 km の Ogle にある Eugene F. Correia は Kaieteur や Lethem への内陸便と、Barbados や Trinidad への地域便を扱います。
- Cheddi Jagan は公式のタクシーサービスを運営しており、運転手はバッジと、クリーム色のシャツジャケットに黒いズボンという制服で見分けられます。
- 市街は南北と東西の碁盤の目に運河が入り組む形で広がっており、2022 年の国勢調査での人口は 125,683 人でした。
- Guyana's embarkation and disembarkation form is filled in online at ed.gpf.gov.gy, and the airport says it can be completed up to 30 days before you travel, saving time on arrival.
- Official taxis wait just outside the arrivals area at Cheddi Jagan around the clock and charge fixed rates to Georgetown and other destinations.
- Cheddi Jagan offers free Wi-Fi and charging stations throughout the airport, useful for messaging your driver or hotel before you leave the building.
- The Scotiabank and Republic Bank cash machines are in the temporary arrivals area, and only the Scotiabank machine accepts international cards.
- Car hire at Cheddi Jagan is in the Greeter's Hall of the arrivals terminal, where Massy Motors acts as the local agent for National, Enterprise and Alamo.
- A valid foreign licence lets you drive in Guyana for 60 days from entry, with your passport as proof of the date. After that you need a Guyanese foreign driver's permit.

- Plan the 41 km airport run for daylight if you can. British guidance advises avoiding the Cheddi Jagan road late at night and before dawn after fatal crashes caused by erratic driving.
- Gangs have followed cars from Cheddi Jagan and robbed passengers on arrival at their destination, so keep windows closed and doors locked on the drive into Georgetown.
- Within Georgetown, pre-booked taxis from reputable companies or hotel ranks are the recommended way around. Do not hail cabs in the street, and use public minibuses only if booked through a reputable source.
